Maine has been wonderful. It is vacationland. I have already mapped the drive from Nashville
to Camden for our next vacation. 22
hours. Hmmm… The coast feels very
romantic – quite “off the beaten path.”
It feels a little bit like the Oregon coast, but different. Oregon was a string of waterfront towns,
while Maine has harbor towns, each one with it’s own identity and history. We have neglected to take photos of the
houses. The houses are big and old and
beautiful. Maybe we’ll see some more and
get photos.
As we left Freeport, we headed to
Portland Head Light at Fort Williams State Park in Cape Elizabeth. It is a beautiful, free park. Being a Sunday, it was crowded with people
everywhere, picnicking and touring, walking or biking. The rocky shoreline was nice to see again,
reminiscent of Acadia. You could not go
into the lighthouse and we opted to skip the museum, though it was just $2 per
person. We got some great pictures.
Then we drove right through Boston,
a little harrowing, but not terrible, to the south side to Wompatuck State
Park. It is a little dated, but has a
large campground. We were surprised to
find only 110 hookups, but everything we need seems to be working. (Just no AC which we don’t need here!) Our campsite is huge and hidden from our
neighbors. The girls have lots of room
to explore. We have a WWII bunker just
behind us. It is overgrown with grass
and trees. Brad found an edge of the
wall on one end and there is some sort of chimney or vent on top.
