Since I began having sleep/anxiety issues about two years
ago, a good night’s sleep has taken on new meaning. It is such a relief to have a good night’s
sleep – especially after a bad one. Last
night was a relief. I am thankful.
Today was our hiking day in Tuolomne. We hiked to Lembert Dome and all around on
Lembert Dome. We could see “our spot” in
the meadow by the river. There was such
an amazing 360-degree view. I could have
stayed for hours. We sat for a
while. The girls had a granola bar. We were visited by an extremely extroverted
ground squirrel. Then we climbed our way
back down and headed on up the trail to Dog Lake. This is a much prettier lake than its name
suggests. I wished we had worn
swimsuits. But we didn’t really have
time anyway, so we took some pictures and hiked back out. Round trip was about 4 miles and it took us
about 3 hours. This may be my favorite
hike so far. Everyone else agreed it was
toward the top.
The girls were begging to go back to “our spot,” so we went
there for lunch. We only had an hour and
a half, but they enjoyed every second of it.
It makes my heart hurt a little right now to know that we won’t be going
back there – at least for a while. It
was cloudier and breezier today, so I’m really glad we spent our long day
relaxing in the meadow and playing in the water yesterday while it was warmer.
At 3:00 we went to the Visitor’s Center for a brief ranger
talk on T.M. so that Carmen could get her J.R. page signed and get her
badge. This is the first time they did
not have her say a pledge, but she did sign a J.R. record book and the ranger
announced to everyone in the store what was happening and everyone
applauded. I don’t think C minded too
much.
Then we went back to camp to have our 4th of July
dinner. I made pasta salad with some
leftover veggies and salad dressing, and I made my favorite fruit salad: blueberries, strawberries and cantaloupe. It’s such a great flavor combo! Brad made a fire and we roasted wienies and
had hot dogs, baked beans straight from the can and Ruffles potato chips. OK, we normally do not eat like that, but it
is a holiday!
At 7:00 we went to a ranger-led Campfire for Kids in our
campground. It was cute, maybe for
slightly younger kids, but my kids adapt.
The ranger told stories and led us in songs and all were related to the
park. She did a great job.
Back at our campsite, Brad revived the fire and we talked for
a bit and then sent the girls to bed.
When I came back out from “tucking them in,” Brad had thrown the last
log on the fire. It was one that had
been left here and it was HUGE. He
didn’t think it would burn but it caught over the hot coals and was roaring
when I came outside. That one log burned
for over an hour. Nice little surprise!
We are a little sad to leave, but are also ready to get
cleaned up. The pollen is peaking here
and everything is yellow. Plus showers
and laundry are long overdue. Happy
travels!
