Day 75 (July 30) – Yellowstone (Mammoth Hot Springs)

We tried to leave early this morning, but didn’t get gone till 9:30.  Brad did not sleep well last night and was pretty tired.  The girls had stayed up late with me watching the Olympics so they were tired too.  Then we had to stop by the post office in Butte.  The books and on-line info say the campgrounds in Y fill up by 10 AM (one place said 8, but people haven’t even checked out by then.   Anyway, we got to the north entrance about 11:00 and saw that several of the campgrounds we were interested in were still open.  We drove straight through Mammoth Hot Springs (i.e. Disneyworld – oh the traffic and crowds of people) and on south a little way to Indian Creek campground.  We chose a spot and then had a terrible time getting the camper level.  After trying just about every spot in the pull through lane, we finally found one where we were almost level – and that was still with the tire up on three blocks on one side!  It’s a really big site though with lots of shade.

Then we ate lunch and rested.

This is such a huge park with 8 different areas, so we felt we needed to see something today.  We drove back up to Mammoth Hot Springs to see what that was all about.  We perused the VC and saw the 1978ish film about Y being the first National Park.  Carmen got a Jr. Ranger paper to fill out.  Then we went walking along the Lower Terrace Boardwalk.  There is a really neat area with terraces of minerals that have been deposited by hot springs as they flow down.  I think in the wetter part of the year there is a lot more water flowing, but it was pretty dry today.  We did see a few bubbling springs.  It was hotter here than I had thought it would be (80s) and very crowded.

We came back to camp for dinner (stir-fry) and a fire.  It does cool off at night.  Tomorrow we are braving the Old Faithful Area.
