Day 45 - Toward Yosemite

Today we tried to leave early, but we ended up leaving around 9:30.  We were planning to drive 4 ½ hours to somewhere outside of Yosemite.  We ended up driving 5 ½ hours.  I’m not sure why it took so long.  Maybe we drove slowly.  Or maybe it was the 45-minute lunch stop we made at Albertsons grocery store.  We also had to stop once we got cell signal to decide where we were going.  It’s hard to plan our next stop while we are settled somewhere, because I like to enjoy where we are and not feel like we are always thinking about what comes next.  But the alternative is planning it on the road – same day, which isn’t much fun either.

Anyway, we drove by Las Vegas on the northern outskirts of town.  I know some people who love it, but I don’t have a desire to go there.  That was close enough for me.

We drove through Hawthorne, NV, which was a very odd place with hundreds of grass-covered bunkers sunk into the ground.  There seems to be an army depot there that is in charge of distribution and destruction of ammo.  However, we also saw an entrance labeled something like: Naval Undersea Warfare Detachment.  WHAT??  I couldn’t find anything about that on-line.  We did see in our rear-view mirror a HUGE lake off on the other side of the town.  Are they training with subs in it?  We have seen several things on this trip that made us reference the X-files TV series.  This was one of them.

We approached Mono Vista RV park a little hesitantly as we had read mixed reviews.  Other than an oddly shaped site (bent in the middle at a 45 degree angle), it was all fine.  We each got a shower token good for 5 minutes of hot water.  The cold will stay on.  I think this is a nifty idea!  It makes everyone take short showers.   We didn’t use them though, because they are public showers from 9-6 and we can come back from Yosemite campground (if we get in) and use them later!

We relaxed and rested after a long day of driving.  We plan to get up early tomorrow and head to Yosemite’s Tuolomne Meadows campground and snag a first-come, first-serve site.
