Day 62 (July 17) – Mt. Rainier National Park

Today is the day we have been waiting for.  This is our two-month anniversary and we have come so far.  We are super excited.  Today we meet our friends from Nashville at Mt. Rainier!  OK, maybe we should be more excited about the park itself, but we are ready to see some familiar faces.

We arrived at White River Campground (first come first serve is always a little nerve wracking) and found out they haven’t been very full lately, which means there was room for us!  The Arnetts arrived at almost the exact same time we did.  We met them at the campground entrance and Carmen jumped up and down and all over the street when they pulled up.  (Thankfully not a busy street).  These are friends of ours from church, and we just love this family.  Emma is Carmen’s age and Zane is a year younger than Audra.  We found our campsites, set up and had lunch.  Then we drove up to Sunrise Visitor’s Center, got 4 Jr. Ranger books and went on a short hike.  The views were incredible.  It has a Swiss Alps kind of vibe with the meadows, wildflowers, mountains and snow.  Mt. Rainier itself is almost unbelievable.  It is just so big.  14,410 ft.  Washington’s highest point.  It feels like you can see it from everywhere in the park.  I think you practically can.  We are starting to realize that although the Rockies in CO are filled with 14-ers, the mountains farther west seem bigger because you are usually looking at them from a lower elevation.  We were seeing 14-ers in CO while we were at 8,000-10,000 feet (difference of 4,000-6,000 feet when looking at the peaks).  Now we are looking at a 14-er from about 6,000 ft.  It is massive!

We went back to the campsite and had supper in the rain.  Then the rain let up and we started the fire and roasted giant marshmallows.  Great day.
