Day 59 (July 14) - Mt. Saint Helen's

It is striking, impressive, monumental.  It left me pondering, awe-struck, and a little frightened.  I got butterflies in my stomach several times seeing pictures or video of the volcano collapsing in on itself.  It is amazing to see the before and after pictures of the volcano.  It was a 9,677 foot peak before the 1980 eruption, and it is currently an 8,328 ft mountain.  You can see the crater that was left after everything exploded out the north side.  Now there is a new lava mound that has formed in the center of the crater because of continuing volcanic activity.  We went to Johnston Ridge Observatory, the farthest tourist point and a US Forest service site.  It is a very well-done visitor’s center.  I wish we had had more time, but we were amazed by what we saw!
