Day 52 - Redwoods

Today marks the beginning of a change in our trip.  We will be combining our travel days with sightseeing days and will be in a non-national park phase.

OK, except that Redwoods is a national park…and a state park…or several state parks.  It is co-managed by the national park system and state park system.  It’s a little confusing.

We stopped at the southern most visitor’s center (Kuchel) to get Jr Ranger books, maps and info.  After a little hunting, we finally found our trailhead: Cathedral Trees.  This was in the Prairie Creek SP section.  We were about 3 ½ minutes down the trail when Brad recognized our surroundings and remembered that “Return of the Jedi” shot at least some of the Endor scenes here.  It feels movie-like and/or prehistoric.  The trees are tall and wide and the ferns are the same.  We loved this 2½-mile hike!  These trees had been on Carmen’s “must see” list since she saw a picture in a magazine at Grandma’s house.  We ate lunch back at the camper and headed on up the road to the next KOA – Redwoods KOA!  The drive was a scenic route so we continued to see Redwood trees lining Old Hwy 101.  This KOA was unique because the camp sites were strewn through the forest of Redwoods!  It felt more like camping in a state/national park.

Next stop . . . Oregon!
