Day 53 - Cape Blanco Lighthouse, OR

We made it to Oregon.  We are driving up 101 along the coast.  It is a beautiful drive – mountains/hills on the east and ocean on the west.  And fog, LOTS of fog.  I think the fog is making it chilly.  I have been cold ever since Eureka, CA.  The low today was around 50 and the high 55.  What’s up with that?  It’s JULY!

Today we drove along taking in the views.  Our destination was Cape Blanco Lighthouse and State Park.  We parked the camper up on a hill overlooking the beach and prayed it would be there when we got back.  The lighthouse was a half-mile down the road and the wind was blowing about 40-50 mph nonstop.  It was a cold wind.  They said it always blows like that (or stronger).  I don’t think I could be a lighthouse keeper’s wife.  Not there.  It was a brief, but fascinating tour.  It is the oldest and westernmost LH in OR.  It is still in operation.  It was built in the 1860’s.  Three families lived on site to operate it.  It was a full time job.  They had to clean the lens and the windows, inside and out, by 10 AM every day.  (During the fuel burning years everything got sooty and black every night.)  The inspector could show up anytime and give them the white glove test.

We thought about driving on north a ways to Bullards Beach SP.  It was recommended in our RV book, but I don’t think they have showers.  They do here – hot ones – I tested them before we parked!  Brad worked a little.  We made a big campfire to keep warm (AND for s’mores).  We ate chili and popcorn for supper and drank hot tea and apple cider.  Tomorrow, more touring!  Happy travels!
