Day 171 (Nov 3) – Great Smoky Mtn Natl Park (GSMNP)

We went into the park today.  First we drove out a gravel road along Middle Prong River and then walked the trail that led along an old RR bed.  We were walking on a carpet of leaves surrounded by a colorful forest.  It was a slow, uphill hike.  The farther up we got, the fewer leaves were on the trees.  The river we walked beside was pretty with several rapids and cascade sections.

We walked until we decided to turn back.  Then we ate lunch near the parking area while sitting on logs among the crunchy leaves.

Next we drove to an area called “The Sinks” which is basically a small, but powerful waterfall that crashes and churns into a deep pool.

After that we went on to L’il Greenbrier School and looked in the school and an old cemetery.  Then we caught the trail up to the Walker Sisters’ Cabin.  It was only 1.1 miles to get there, but we had some with little legs who really wanted to walk on their own, so it took a little longer than normal.  J  We finally made it there and back again.  The cabin was really old and neat.  There was a spring house and a small silo/barn type structure.  We headed back to our cabin after that to have supper and birthday brownies.  (Arlie turns 2 on Monday!)

Then … it was time for Bama football.  The AL-LSU game.  The big one.  And boy was it ever.  This is the first game that I can’t wait to watch again – partly because I made the girls go to bed at the beginning of the 4th Q and I want them to see the final touchdown series!  It was a fun way to end the day.  Roll Tide.
