Day 175 (Nov 7) - Gatlinburg

We had planned on going to Asheville, but it is snowing there again and we aren’t confident pulling a trailer in snow, so I guess it just isn’t meant to be.  Instead, we braved Gatlinburg so Carmen could say she has been there.

Because it was still raining (several other reasons too, but that one put us over the edge), Brad dropped me and the girls off in Pigeon Forge at Wonderworks.  This is a cross between a fun house and a science museum.  It was fun and LOUD and thankfully, not at all crowded.  It is completely hands on.  After sitting through a simulated earthquake and standing through a simulated hurricane, I split time with each daughter.  Audra and I tried out the 360 bikes.  You sit two to a bike and pedal as fast as you can till you rotate around the bar you are hanging from and go all the way around – completely upside down.  Then Carmen and I climbed through the ropes course.  The bottom layer of this starts about 20 feet off the ground and there are at least three levels.  You are harnessed to a cable that hangs from a track and then you walk on ropes from platform to platform.  Oh, and it’s dark, but not too dark.  Carmen was a little resistant at the first crossing and then only hesitant at the second.  After that it was smooth sailing.  The girls loved the roller coaster simulator and the giant bubbles.  We had fun and stayed warm and dry.

Brad picked us up and we headed to Gatlinburg.  We ate at Mellow Mushroom.  I don’t love that restaurant, but C wanted pizza.  It was much better than the Franklin version.  The crust was crispy!

Then we walked the drippy streets for a bit to see the town and to find Audra a sweatshirt.  She lost her beloved “Gatlinburg” sweatshirt somewhere in the last week.  It was sort of irreplaceable, but we tried.  Once we were sufficiently cold and over the people and noise, we drove through the GSMNP to get back to camp.  I think we will leave here one day, but until it stops raining, I just don’t know where to go.
