Day 176 (Nov 8) – Cades Cove

Today was a good day.  It was a throw back to the first part of our trip, remeniscent of Rocky Mtn Nat Park (on a much smaller scale).  It was also the first pretty day we’ve had in about a week.  It is amazing how much the weather can affect my mood.

We were going to leave and go to GA, but decided that staying put was easier and we still hadn’t seen Cades Cove, which I have wanted to do for about 5 years.  So that is where we headed.  It is an 11-mile loop that winds through the old CC settlement with several homes and churches you can explore.  We saw a black bear on the way to the Primitive Baptist Church and then caught most of a ranger talk inside the church.  The cemetery out back was neat too.  We stopped quickly at the Methodist Church and then drove up to the Abrams Falls trailhead at the back of the loop.  Here we ate lunch out of our snack box and hiked a 5 mile round trip to a beautiful waterfall.  The hike was moderate, but I am sore!  (out of shape!)  It took us three hours and was just wonderful to be outside on such a pretty day.  The falls reminded me of a waterfall we have hiked to at Fall Creek Falls state park, but I don’t know the name of it.  This was a decent size cascade which poured into a huge pool area at the base.  A very helpful fellow hiker offered to take a family picture for us.  He knew how to use a camera and took several which really turned out great.  It was a good hike.

We finished at 4:30 which is when the mill closed, so we didn’t get to see that, but we stopped at one more cabin and got some good pics of the cove in the evening sunlight.  It is a beautiful setting.  I am glad we stayed and got to go to there.
